Welcome to IndiWoods Tree Shop
At IndiWoods Tree Shop, you can buy native trees in Northern Ireland. We work very closely with Irish nurseries to bring you the best native Irish stock for your woodlands where possible. Our trees are freshly picked and bagged, and we also have a cold store facility for warmer months, extending our planting season.
We have Tubex tree wraps which are cost-effective polypropylene tree wraps which can be recycled in their later years, which are essential to protect from rabbits and hares.
How to use the IndiWoods Tree Shop to buy trees, guards and hedging for your Small Woodland Grant Scheme and Farming with Nature projects.
-
Decide on your species suitable for your land and preference and round up for down to make the tree numbers. It does no harm to have a few extras but don’t buy less than your contract.
-
The trees are sold in bundles of 25’s and 50’s to help you get the right tree mix - all you have to do is select how many bundles you would like.
-
Tree Guards and canes are sold as a unit and come in bundles of 25, 50, or 100 to make this as economical as possible for you with minimal waste. They come in 60cm guards for rabbit protection and 75cm guards for hare protection. Mesh guards are for the Scots Pine and come with two canes. It is a Farming with Nature requirement to guard your trees.
- Hedging - this is worked out at 6 stems per metre with a minimum preference of 75% Hawthorn (whitethorn). This does not need to be guarded unless you have a rabbit problem.
Once you know your tree numbers, we recommend that you PRE-BOOK your tree order as some species, especially hedging, are in high demand and stock can run low very early in the planting season.
We expect to have the first trees available in early November.
We hope you have a great planting season and don’t hesitate to email with any queries.
Thank you
Carolyn

Here is a step by step guide for the FwN Tree Planting option
Step 1 - Carefully look at your FwN contract and work out how many trees you need to plant. Note: you will be planting 1600 trees per ha.
Example - planting 0.42 ha ( multiply this by 1600 to get your tree number (672 trees)
Step 2 - You must protect your trees with a tree guard. Decide if you need to use rabbit guards or hare guards.
Step 3 - It is recommended to plant at least 3 native species in your woodland. Therefore, select a minimum of 3 species that best suit your land. See chart for species selection. Picking a variety of species will make your woodland more resilient in the event of disease in the future and will also create a more diversity for wildlife and habitats.
Example Order
672 trees with rabbit guards and canes. The minimum bundle is 25; therefore, round up, which will give you a few spares for the future.
- 200 Oak @ 85p = £170
- 200 Downy Birch @ 65p = £135
- 100 Hazel @ 90p = £90
- 100 Rowan @ 90p = £90
- 50 Cherry @ 90p = £45
- 25 Crab Apple @ 95p = £23.75
- 600 rabbit guards @ 60p = £360
- 50 rabbit guards @ 65p = £32.50
- 25 rabbit guards @ 70p = £17.50
- Total £963.75 plus VAT
- Delivery £30
This works out at £1.42 per tree, guard and cane. The FwN pays you £4.22 per tree.
Here is a step by step guide for the FwN Hedging option
Step 1 - Carefully look at your FwN contract and work out how many metres of hedging you have. You will be working on a minimum of 6 stems per metre.
Step 2 - Work out your species. You will need 75% hawthorn, and the rest can be made up of 25% other woody species, including blackthorn, hazel, guelder rose, holly and spindle.
We have designed the website so you can buy a variety of species in smaller bundles ( 50’s or 25’s).
You will need to include trees in the hedgerow (a minimum of 4 trees every 100 metres), which are to be protected with 1.2m guards ( so they are identifiable and not cut with the hedge). Pick from a variety of trees, including Rowan, Wild Cherry, Crab Apple, Oak, Alder, Scots Pine, Silver and Downy Birch and Willow
Step 3 -Do you need rabbit protection for your hedge? If YES then the spiral guards and cane are your best option and easy to use. They expand as the tree grows and you can remove them once the hedge is established. This is optional and only required if you have a rabbit problem. The hedge must be protected from stock.
Example Order:
120 metres of hedging (6 per metre = 720 plants)
- 75% hawthorn 540 (round up to 550) @ 55p per tree = £302.50
- 25% mixed trees (170 plants – round up to 175)
- 100 blackthorn @ 65p = £65.00
- 25 guelder rose @ £1.40 = £35.00
- 50 hazel @ 90p = £45.00
- 1.2 metre tree guard and stake x 5 @ £3 each = £15.00
- Total £462.50
- Delivery £30 (collection available)
Individual 1.2 metre guards are £3 each, including guard and stake. Estimate 4 every 100 metres
This works out at £3.85 per metre (£432.50) plus VAT
DAERA will pay £6.49 per metre (120m = £778.80)
