Our plants are between 1 and 1.5m tall. A small tree or shrub which is often coppiced but if left to grow, can reach 12 metres and live for over 80 years – if coppiced, it can live for hundreds of years. Hazel is commonly found in hedgerows or as part of the understory in Oak and Ash Woodland. Produces an abundance of nuts in a group of 1 to 4 nuts – a welcome food source for wildlife such as caterpillars, door mice, and humans. Known as the “Tree of Knowledge” in Ireland.
